In Japan, there is a centuries old tradition that I find so moving. When a treasured bowl or cup breaks, it isn't hidden away in a cupboard, and it certainly isn't thrown out. Instead, it's carefully repaired with lacquer mixed with pure gold, so that every crack is traced in shining, precious metal. The result is that the very places where the bowl broke become the most beautiful and valuable part of it. Nothing is disguised. The history of the breakage is honoured and made golden. This art is called Kintsugi and it's one of the most hopeful ways I know to think about healing from trauma.
I'm Rebecca Muller, a BABCP and EMDRUK accredited trauma therapist based in North Berwick, East Lothian, working online with clients across the UK and globally. If you've found your way here, you may be carrying a sense that something in you has been broken by what you've been through, that you'll never quite be the same again. I want to gently offer you a different way of seeing it. You are not ruined. You are a bowl waiting to be mended in gold, and EMDR therapy can help you do exactly that.
Your Trauma Doesn't Have To Be Hidden Away
So many of the people I work with arrive carrying not just their trauma, but a deep sense of shame about it. They feel they should be 'over it' by now. They worry that they're damaged, broken, or somehow less than they were before. They've been trying to hide the cracks, to paper over them and carry on as though nothing happened, all the while exhausted by the effort of concealment.
Kintsugi offers a radically different philosophy. It doesn't ask us to pretend the breakage never happened, and it doesn't try to make the object look brand new, as though its history could be erased. Instead, it metaphorically says this happened, and it is part of you now, and it can be transformed into something of great beauty and strength. Your cracks are not something to be ashamed of. Held and healed with care, they can become the most golden part of your life story.
What EMDR Has In Common With Gold
EMDR which stands for Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing is one of the most thoroughly researched trauma therapies in the world. It's recommended by NICE (the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, which sets the gold standard for treatment in the UK) and is available on the NHS for trauma and PTSD. It is a proven, evidence based path to recovery, not something experimental.
Here's where the Kintsugi image becomes so apt. EMDR doesn't erase what happened to you. It doesn't pretend the breakage never occurred, and it doesn't try to return you to some imagined, unbroken 'before.' Instead, it helps you process and integrate your experience, gently guiding your brain to reprocess the stuck traumatic memory so that it can finally be filed where it belongs, in the past. The memory remains part of your story, but it stops causing you pain. And in the mending, something remarkable happens - many people find they emerge not simply 'as good as before,' but stronger, wiser and more whole for having healed.
Think of it like this: healing from trauma isn't about erasing the cracks. It's about filling them with gold so that the places where you broke become the places where you are strongest. That’s your survival story.
The Beauty Of Post Traumatic Growth
There's a well researched idea in psychology called post traumatic growth. It describes something I have witnessed again and again in my work, that people who have moved through trauma, with the right support, often discover a depth, a compassion, a clarity about what matters, and a resilience that they didn't have before. This isn't about being grateful for what hurt you, and it's certainly not about minimising your pain. It's about the extraordinary human capacity to transform even our deepest wounds into gold.
The person who has healed from trauma is not the same as the person who was never wounded. They are, in a very real sense, stronger for having mended, more themselves than ever, with seams of gold running through the places that once felt only broken.
You Are Not Broken Beyond Repair
If there is one thing I would want you to take from this, it's this, the cracks you carry do not make you worthless, damaged, or beyond help. They make you human. And with care, they can be mended in a way that leaves you more beautiful, more resilient, and more wholly yourself than before. Your story isn't over. The gold is still to come.
Frequently Asked Questions About EMDR And Healing From Trauma
Can you really heal from trauma and become stronger?
Yes. Research into post traumatic growth shows that, with the right support, many people emerge from trauma with greater resilience, compassion and clarity than before. EMDR helps process traumatic memories so they no longer cause distress, allowing this kind of growth to unfold.
Does EMDR erase the memory of what happened?
No. EMDR doesn't erase your memories or pretend the event never happened. It helps your brain reprocess the memory so that it settles into the past and loses its emotional charge. Your history remains part of your story, but it stops hurting you.
What is post traumatic growth?
Post traumatic growth is the positive psychological change some people experience after working through trauma. It can include a deeper appreciation of life, stronger relationships, greater personal strength and a clearer sense of meaning. It doesn't erase the pain, but it can grow alongside it.
