My Qualification Journey: A Passion for Mental Health and Expertise in Therapy

As an online therapist based in Argyll and Bute, my journey in the field of mental health and therapy has been one of continuous learning so I can help my clients more effectively. My interest in the human mind began in the late 1980s when I first delved into child psychology and became captivated by the intricacies of attachment theory. This early fascination set the stage for a lifelong commitment to understanding and supporting individuals facing mental health challenges.

After completing my A-levels, including psychology, I embarked on a foundational journey in social work, keen to make a meaningful impact in substance misuse community projects and support children with physical and mental health issues. However, my desire to learn more led me to pursue formal academic studies at the university level, where I explored the philosophy of mind, consciousness, and the psychoanalytic tradition, laying the groundwork for my future career in therapy.

The 2000s marked a period of practical application and expansion as I transitioned into running therapeutic groups and offering personal coaching. This era of growth culminated in a transformative experience abroad in South Africa, where I deepened my expertise in advanced counselling, psychotherapy, hypnotherapy, and Reiki. Working within diverse communities, alongside NGOs, allowed me to refine my skills and develop an understanding of various therapeutic modalities.

Upon returning to the UK, I recognised the need to align my skills with national standards and embarked on the process of gaining accreditation and registration with the BABCP and BACP. This process involved obtaining certifications and diplomas in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and systemic family therapy, solidifying my expertise in these areas and ensuring that I maintain the highest professional standards in my practice.

In recent years, I continued to pursue advanced training and qualifications. Completing my MSc in CBT, specialising in trauma, further enriched my clinical expertise and equipped me with the knowledge to support individuals facing complex mental health issues. Additionally, training in EMDR, The Rewind Technique, Schema Therapy, Narrative Exposure Therapy, and Cognitive Processing Therapy has expanded my therapeutic toolkit, allowing me to offer comprehensive and effective support to clients facing diverse challenges.

Through continuous learning and a dedication to my craft, I strive to provide clients with the highest quality of care and support. My qualification journey stands as a testament to my unwavering commitment to professional growth and expertise, ensuring that I can meet the diverse needs of those I serve with compassion, empathy, and skill.
